Big Luna was a man who was later revealed to be the head of a spy ring operating in Hawaii.

Biography[]

Pre-Series[]

Presumably born in China, not much was revealed about Big Luna's early life or past except that he joined the Ministry of State Security- MSS and began conducting operations for them.

Sometime prior to 2021, Big Luna relocated to Hawaii and established a base of operations in an unknown wilderness area located next to the Pacific Ocean.

He also recruited women including fellow spy, Myra Tan with the group using the Namaka Ale House or either creating it to identify the male patrons that came into the bar and see if they had access to highly classified, need-to-known information concerning the United States government and its jet program.

Once the men were identified, other women who had been recruited into the ring befriended them and began a romantic relationship with them while Myra who was disguised as a bartender regularly gave the men spiked drinks that would presumably have them confessing about the information, the drink itself essentially a truth sermon for the men or ultimately leave them sedated or unconsciousness, allowing the ring to gain access to their information.

Two such woman operating in the ring were Noelani Illihau and Sally, both of whom were cocktail waitresses at the bar, Sally befriending Don Sloane although she failed to extract any information from him, ultimately disappearing sometime later which prompted Sloane to file a missing person's report on while Noelani met and befriended Navy Lieutenant Commander David Walters, beginning a relationship with him and prompting Walters to take a picture and send it back to his family in Grand Rapids, Michigan, announcing she was his girlfriend.

It was presumably during that time of Walters and Noelani being in a relationship that Big Luna managed to get access to Walters's flat thanks to Noelani with Big Luna regularly creeping into the apartment and secretly dosing him with dextroamphetamine that he also disguised as vitamin supplements Walters took and as time progressed, the drugs began affecting Walters as he became worn-out and withdrawn, something his fellow Navy personnel noticed.

A few days prior to the Pilot, Noelani who was presumably genuinely in love with Walters, fearing for her life or wanting to get out of the ring, confronted Big Luna, which saw him murdering her by stabbing her to death with a knife he had but not before Noelani's fingernails managed to get some of the material from the knife underneath her fingernails that would eventually expose Big Luna as her murderer.

After she had died, Big Luna presumably put her body in a car and pushed off it off a ravine, either by himself or with assistance from the other members of the ring, the impact causing the car to topple over onto its side and result in Noelani's neck being broken, Big Luna hoping fleeing the scene, hoping it would never be found or that once it was discovered, the authorities would investigate and ultimately write it off as a tragic accident.

NCIS: Hawaii Season 1[]

In the NCIS: Hawaii Season 1 premiere episode, Pilot, Walters who was still suffering from the effects of being unknowingly dosed with dextroamphetamine suffered a cardiac arrest and died, resulting in the jet going out of control and crashing into the mountain which prompted a swift response from the FBI, NTSB and Honolulu Police Department as well as the arrival of Navy Captain Joe Milius who was tasked with retrieving any highly-classified information to the scene which was a mountain area outside of O'ahu and the eventual appearance of NCIS Special Agent in Charge Jane Tennant who had the area designated as a crime scene.

When Jane arrived at the bar a few hours later, she briefly spoke to Myra while Big Luna remained sitting, drinking and overhearing the conversation that ended with Jane leaving, having learnt nothing new.

Two nights later, NCIS Special Agent Kai Holman arrived at the bar and went undercover, posing as a customer. He then proceeded to test Big Luna by wondering where Helena's was with Big Luna stating it was north which exposed the truth that he was not a native to Hawaii as a native would have said "Mauka" which is Hawaiian for "upland or to the mountains" with Kai also revealing that Big Luna was also a member of the spy ring in question.

Upon being exposed, Big Luna attempted to attack Kai, only for Kai to fight back, having used his duress word: "I'm new to the island", alerting Jane and his two colleagues, NCIS Special Agents Jesse Boone and Lucy Tara to what was going on. The three agents leapt out of their cars and headed to the bar, Jane and Kai going after Big Luna who had fled while Jesse and Lucy went upstairs to find Charles Randolph, an DOD engineer who was also the ring's latest target.

With his operation exposed and the authorities after him, Big Luna fled to his safehouse and immediately set it on fire, destroying all the hard drives while setting on the files and photos on fire.

Upon Jane cornering him, instead of surrendering, he retreated, racing through a forest area, Jane and Kai in hot pursuit before all three stopped at a mountain terrain that led into the ocean and upon being cornered for the second time that night, Big Luna jumped into the ocean, presumably hoping to escape, only for his efforts to be in vain as Jane and Kai leapt in after him, Big Luna fighting the two of them and even going as to far to pick up the Glock Jane had lost during their earlier fight to shoot at her while she was underwater, all of his shots missing.

Thanks to Kai's knowledge about the ocean, he and Jane dived underwater just as Big Luna noticed too late a wave approaching which swept him away, the sheer impact causing him to drown in the process.

Although his final fate is not revealed, it's presumed that Big Luna's remains were either eventually recovered by the United Coast Guard, brought ashore and sent back to his native China or elsewhere for burial or that to this day, his body remains lost at sea, the ocean waters too treacherous for a search to find them to be conducted.

Personality[]

Despite not having much dialogue, Big Luna was a man who at first appeared to be an ordinary, average citizen with a passion for drinks.

However, in reality, he operated with a degree of ruthlessness as he went to great lengths to cover up the ring's existence by killing those he believed were a threat to it or were getting too close to exposing it which was seen when he attempted to attack Kai in the back of the Ale House and which presumably served as a motive as to why he drugged Navy Lieutenant Commander David Walters in hopes of stopping Walters from tracking down his missing girlfriend.

In the case of Noelani Illihau who he stabbed to death, Big Luna staged her death as an accident, implying he had some awareness of how the Hawaiian or United States police forces operate.

Upon discovering the ring had been exposed and that a group of federal agents were after him, Big Luna ultimately fled the bar, retreating to the safehouse where he immediately destroyed all the hard drives and burnt the files and photos in an effort to stop the information from falling into the hands of the authorities.

Despite Jane confronting him twice, Big Luna proved himself to be devious as he outwitted her, giving her the slip, implying he wanted to either escape and go into hiding of his own choice rather than end up being arrested by the authorities which would have seen him being forced to give up information on his handlers as well as the ring he was in charge of.

He was also able to use the surroundings he was in to his advantage which was seen during his fight against Jane and Kai once all three had landed into the ocean.

However, even though he had a detailed knowledge of Hawaii, Big Luna was also extremely arrogant as during the latter stages of the fight when he attempted to kill Jane and Kai, he failed to notice a new wave of the ocean and ignored it, only to realize at the last second what was happening behind him, an event that ultimately cost him his life.

Physical Appearance[]

Big Luna was a man in his forties with short black/brown hair and brown eyes.

In his first appearance where he was seen at the bar, drinking while presumably overhearing Jane talking to Myra, he wore a striped brown shirt with the fact he was positioned difficult to see what else he was wearing.

He later wore a yellow/white shirt with symbols on the centre of it and near the collar, black trousers and black runners.

Abilities[]

As a foreign agent operating aboard, Big Luna was presumably trained in counter-surveillance, spycraft, weaponry and hand-to-hand combat which allowed him to get an advantage over those he targeted.

Hand to Hand Combat[]

Trained in fighting, Big Luna could easily hold his own in battle as well as presumably subdue or outright kill his targets if he chose to do so.

He presumably did this off-screen to other people but during his fights against NCIS Special Agents Jane Tennant and Kai Holman, Big Luna met his match as Jane was a former agent with the CIA and Kai was a former Marine, the two having received training in hand-to-hand combat in their previous respective careers which allowed them to take on Big Luna separately and not only endure his punches but fight back.

During their fight that ultimately took them to the ocean, Big Luna fought the two NCIS agents one at one, Jane and then Kai with one of his kicks even being powerful enough to send Jane back into the water once they were both on dry land.

Knives[]

Big Luna had a great skill with knives as he used one to kill Noelani Illihau and attempted to attack NCIS Special Agent Kai Holman, only for Kai to get the better of him and best him.

Firearms[]

Big Luna used a firearm to shoot at Jane and Kai at the safe house, implying he also had great skill with it although he abandoned it after it ran out of bullets and during their battle in the ocean, he took Jane's Glock which she had dropped and fired rounds from it at her underwater even though each shot missed, presumably due to the darkness and Big Luna's own unfamiliarity with such a weapon.
