Joan Matteson (born January 21, 1954 - died April 3, 1972) was a Private in the United States Marine Corps and also a good friend of future Marine Gunnery Sergeant/NCIS Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

Joan Matteson was a Private First Class who trained at Camp LeJeune with Leroy Jethro Gibbs in spring of 1972.
She died on the way to her first deployment in Okinawa, Japan after completing her Marine Combat Training at Camp LeJeune. A helo was shot down, killing her and several other Marines.
In addition to beating several male Marines’ times on the obstacle course, PFC Matteson was shown to be quite competent at auto mechanics, impressing Gibbs with her skill.
She was quick on her feet, clever, and not afraid to speak her mind. She was seen lightly teasing Gibbs more than once.
Matteson is a slim woman who stands at about 5 Feet 7 Inches. She has long, brunette hair and light brown eyes. She also has a rather notable mole on one of her cheeks.
