Biography

Pre-Series

Born some time between 1936 to 1956, not much is known about John's early life except for the fact he was the son of Nelson McGee and Penelope Langston.

At some point, John attended Annapolis and subsequently joined the Navy, rising to the rank of Commander and later Admiral.

He later married an unnamed woman and they had two children: Tim and Sarah. The two would later split up and the former Mrs. McGee would enter into a relationship with a man from Dallas.

Tim McGee mentions numerous times before John McGee is introduced in the series that he and his father are not close, and have a complicated relationship.

NCIS Season 9

NCIS Season 10

He first makes an appearance in Squall (episode) when he is present on the ship U.S.S. Borealis where the doctor onboard was found dead. He and his son immediately start arguing and John is visibly disappointed with his son's career choice and that he is not a "tougher" man. During the episode he becomes the suspect after the team finds evidence he saw the doctor, and he reveals in interrogation that the reason he went to see the doctor was that he was sick and is currently in stage four with terminal cancer. He confesses to being a bad father and a "son of a bitch", but not a murderer. Tim watches and sheds a tear. His right-hand man is arrested for killing the doctor, with the motive being that he did not want the information to become public so that he could go to the White House for a cabinet position with Admiral McGee. At the end of the episode, the Admiral and his son go for a walk and their relationship have softened a bit.

NCIS Season 12

NCIS Season 21

It was revealed that John was a sperm donor.

Relationships

  • Timothy McGee: John's son. It is well described by Tim that the admiral did not approve of much of what he did in life and also that he was not as good a father as he thought; thinking that providing for his family is all they needed to be happy and therefore didn't provide much, if any, emotional support. Tim describes that his father constantly criticized many of his choices and/or actions when he was young which led to their strained relationship into Tim's adulthood and going several years without talking to one another. When John was revealed to be sick, they decided to try mending things and establish a real father-son bond. When John eventually passed away, Tim was shown to have taken it rather hard.
