He is the husband/widower of Michelle Hanna, and the father of Aiden Hanna and Kamran Hanna.

As a child, Sam was sent to school by his father who was a Colonel with his father disciplining young Sam very hard.

During his time in high school, Sam was a wide receiver on his high school football team and had plans to go pro, but a shin injury prevented this.

After graduating from high school, Sam later joined the United States Navy, greatly disappointing his father who had hoped that his son would follow in his footsteps and become a Marine instead.

During his time as a SEAL, Sam learned to swim after realizing he needed to be proficient. Sam would rise to the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer in DEVGRU (SEAL Team Six), and his reputation made him be regarded as a legend by his fellows. He served in Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq. While on one mission in Bosnia, Sam along with another member of his unit, Dickerson were both captured and tortured before being buried alive.

Tragically, Dickerson who had been shot later succumbed to his wounds and died while Sam was eventually rescued by the other members of their team.

At some point, Sam met and befriended Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett with the two training together and during that time, Steve promised Sam a steak dinner.

In the early 2000s, Sam was called to Sudan and along with some SEALs, helped free a group of aid workers under attack from the Janjaweed. Sam killed one in self-defense who also happened to be the father of Mowahd Dusa.

Feeling guilty over his involvement, Sam brought Moe to the United States.

Sam eventually left the active duty with the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer, joining the Navy Reserves in 2002, having served the Navy for twenty years. He is often regarded as legend for his duty.

After retiring from the Navy in the early 2000s, Sam spent some time at the VA hospital with the staff there helping him get his life together.

Once he was better, he applied to join NCIS which resulted in him being assigned to the Office of Special Projects in Los Angeles which presumably occurred after he completed his training at FLETC.

During that time, he also met Michelle while working on a joint task force with the CIA with the two later marrying and having two children together, a boy named Aiden and a girl named Kamran.

Upon becoming an NCIS Special Agent, Sam was first partnered with fellow agent Mark Ruiz with their partnership lasting for a year before Ruiz later left NCIS due to him suffering from a problem with drugs.

Sometime after that, Sam was assigned to the Office of Special Projects and met fellow agent G. Callen, the two working together although they remained wary of each other.

On New Year's Day 2007, Sam and Callen, having been partners for less than a month, implying they met each other during December 2006, worked together on a case concerning an Armenian mob boss with the two going undercover, Callen's role unknown while Sam was assigned as Callen's backup.

During the operation, Sam ended up being caught by a sentry with the unnamed mob boss handing Callen a gun while demanding Callen shoot Sam as proof of his loyalty.

Callen did so and fired his gun at Sam's head, knowing the gun was empty due to its weight.

From that moment onwards, Callen and Sam became good friends.

As a former Navy SEAL, Sam is emotionally distant but has a good friendship with his partner, Callen and Operations Manager, Hetty Lange.

He takes great pride in his status as a SEAL and becomes offended at anyone who would dare insult the name, even possessing a hatred for SEALs who shame themselves which is demonstrated when he arrested Navy Chief Petty Officer Thomas Argento for killing civilians.

Physical Appearance

Sam is a tall, African American man in his mid-forties with a shaved head and brown eyes.

While in the field, participating in a raid, he, like Callen, Kensi and Deeks wore an NCIS bulletproof vest with the word "NCIS" located in the center of it, the vest also covering the upper and lower areas of Sam's chest. Beginning with the NCIS: Los Angeles Season 7 episode, Angels and Daemons (episode), Sam starts wearing a much smaller version of the vest, one that covers the center of his chest with the words "NCIS" in the center of it, the

A former Navy SEAL and also an NCIS agent, Sam has a variety of skills that make him an asset to both the NCIS agency and the Office of Special Projects.

Hand to Hand Combat

Having learnt fighting techniques while in the SEALs, Sam is skilled in hand-to-hand combat and can defend himself in a fight, often using his surroundings to his advantage, allowing him to regularly subdue an opponent or suspect he and his OSP colleagues have been searching for.

Like his fellow NCIS colleagues, Sam is trained in using firearms and fire a shot capable of either injuring or killing his target.

Sam is multilingual being fluent in many languages with prime examples being Arabic, Turkish, Japanese, Persian, Qur'an, Farsi, Danish, Hebrew, Korean and Spanish.

In the NCIS: Los Angeles Season 4 premiere episode, Endgame (NCIS: Los Angeles episode), Sam reveals that he knows Farsi but acknowledges that a long time has passed since he used it and that he might be rusty. Despite this, Sam is able to translate an encrypted document and explain its contents to his fellow NCIS colleagues.

Sam has great knowledge on various types of explosives that he and the OSP team often come across. He is also capable of dismantling a bomb, having been trained to do so.
